While Brielle was excited to see her closest friends and family and to get a glimpse of her new set family and friends, she saw no one except for Asher. Her eyes were locked on him as a tear fell down her face. Had she not been so entranced by her future husband, she would have noticed her face was starting to hurt from the smile that couldn’t be wiped away.
Brielle was glad she was on her father’s arm as she walked down the aisle, it prevented her from sprinting and he kept pace with the music. She kissed him on the cheek and Asher shook his hand. She heard her dad stifle a sob as he walked to his seat.
They turned to face the officiant. Asher snaked his pinky through hers and she gave him a quick squeeze. They were about to take a huge leap together, into the unknown, and it felt right to have him by her side.
“Dearly beloved, we’re gathered here today to celebrate the joyous matrimony of Asher Wilson to Brielle Parker…”
Brielle barely heard a word the man said for the rest of his opening speech. Asher’s best man, whose name she had yet to learn, gave his reading followed by Gabby’s reading. Brielle was sure both were great but she could only think about her vows and her total, inexplicable love for the man standing next to her. A man she barely knew.
“Brielle? Are you ready for your vows?” The officiant handed her the sheet of paper she’d written her vows on.
She turned to face Asher and began to read.
Chapter Eight
Asher
Brielle looked up at him and smiled before she began reading her vows. Asher couldn’t believe how lucky he was to be spending the rest of his life with someone so beautiful and loving and kind. He smiled back at her, hoping he could take in every word she uttered to repeat to himself for eternity.
“Asher. I know we’ve only just officially met and have only known each other for a week. But it feels like I’ve known you for my entire life. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted in a man. You’re strong, gentle, kind, funny. Most importantly, I know you’ll be there for me, in good times and in not so good times.”
“We may not have met in the most conventional way but I promise you our marriage will be less dramatic. I will do my best to serve you, support you, and love you as your wife each and every day. To laugh when things are tough and to cry with you when laughing won’t fix it. We don’t know what life has in store for us but I’m excited to tackle all of life’s challenges with you.”
“So, though we may be getting married almost Sight Unseen, know that you have my whole heart. Every day. Until the day I die. I love you, Asher Wilson, and nothing makes me happier than knowing I get to spend the rest of my life as your wife.”
Brielle folded her paper and handed it back to the officiant. She leaned in close, Asher could smell her perfume, and whispered, “How was that?”
“Perfect,” he whispered back.
“And now, Asher, are you prepared to read your vows to Brielle?”
“Of course.” Asher fumbled in his pocket until he found the piece of paper containing his vows. He squeezed Brielle’s hand and tried to look into her eyes as he began.
“Brielle. I’m afraid my vows will be a bit shorter than yours so I apologize. There is no way to top the promises you made me. And so, I will promise you the following. To always be kind and understanding, to help you with whatever you need at any time of day, and to always, always be honest with you.”
“We will have good days. We will have bad days. And I’m sure we’ll have a lot of days in between the two. Though I don’t know what life has in store for us, I do know that we will face it together as husband and wife. And for that, I am truly grateful.”
Asher smiled as Brielle gave him an adorable thumbs up. He could tell they were going to have a lot of fun together. After all, they’d hopefully already dealt with so much together. He hoped it was mostly fun and laughter from here on out.
“Well, let’s get on with the ceremony then!” The officiant finished his speech and began the rest of the ceremony. They exchanged rings, Asher noting how Brielle’s eyes lit up seeing her wedding ring on her finger and how electric her fingertips felt as she slipped his over his knuckle. Brielle’s father said a quick prayer, and suddenly, the ceremony was over as quickly as it began.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife. Asher,” he said, giving Asher a quick wink, “you may now kiss your bride.”
Asher raised his eyebrows at Brielle but didn’t have time to ask if it was ok for him to kiss her. She leaped into his arms and planted a kiss on his lips as the crowd cheered. Asher almost lost his balance, he was so surprised by his new bride, but quickly regained his composure.
He pulled back and brushed a strand of hair out of her face. “Ready?”
She nodded and Asher gave her another quick peck on the lips. Then, he took her hand and held it up in the air and looked out at their friends and family.
Everyone in the room had a broad smile on their face. Asher breathed a sigh of relief at the love and support they received from their loved ones. He could tell Brielle was relieved too, he saw her visibly relax once she turned around.
“Let’s go!”
Brielle took the lead, practically skipping down the aisle towards the door. Asher kept pace, high fiving his dad as he passed. Stacey was waiting for them in the hallway with champagne.
“Congratulations, you two!”
The trio clinked glasses. “Thank you, Stacey!” Brielle gave her a huge hug. “Now...what’s next?”
“You start the rest of your lives!”
Asher looked at Brielle and smiled. “Ready when you are.”
She reached up to kiss him. “The rest of our lives starts now.” Her lips landed on his and suddenly they were the only two people in the world that mattered.
They had found their happily ever after, sight unseen.
Chapter Nine
“No...if you just...it went fine! I…” Abigail paced back and forth, her face growing more and more distressed by the minute. Mark squatted against a wall nearby, head in his hands.
“Yes, I understand.” Abigail was defeated. “Yes, we will be there first thing Monday morning.”
She held the phone in her hand for a long while after the line went dead. Mark finally looked up at her, his expression was just as defeated as hers.
“Well?” he asked.
“I would enjoy your employment for another day. It sounds like we’re both out of a job.”
Mark stood up. “I knew I never should have gotten involved in this. You ruined my career, Abigail!”
“You ruined your own career, Mark. You could have said no at any time. You didn’t. You’re just as responsible as I am.”
He tried his hardest to keep his voice quiet. He didn’t need the nosy onlookers in the lobby in his business and raising his voice would draw further attention. They were already drawn in by Abigail’s distraught pacing.
“Whatever. We have a meeting Monday?”
“I’m sure it’s with HR. To fire us.”
“Great. Well, I’m out of here.”
“But the reception...”
Mark shook his head and laughed. “You think I care about the reception Abigail? This is your doing. You deal with it.”
He turned and walked out the front door. Abigail stood in the lobby, unsure of what to do next. Her plan had backfired and there was no one to blame but herself.
Abigail heard the sound of footsteps walking towards her. “Tough luck, huh?” She turned around and was face to face with Brielle. “Stacey said the producers already called me to apologize during the ceremony. Are going to send us on a pretty sweet honeymoon to keep us from suing over this.”
“Well isn’t that nice.” She tried to keep a brave face.
“It is. It really is.” Brielle smiled. “I hope you got everything you wanted, Abigail. Because I know I certainly did.”
Brielle didn’t wait for an answer. She turned and rejoined her husband. Together, they walked into the main ballroom for their reception.
Abigail waited for the event to be over in the lobby. Alone.
